Edema can be triggered by hormone imbalance, nutritional deficiency, an allergic reaction, injury, poor circulation, varicose veins, and heart, kidney, and liver disease. Each of these conditions requires proper evaluation and treatment of the underlying disease.
Exercise: A common and benign condition in which the legs swell after sitting or traveling (known as dependent edema) can be alleviated by improving the circulation of the blood and lymphatic system. Be sure to get up and walk every 15 minutes, or elevate your legs, while sitting for prolonged periods of time. |

Chronically dry lips can also signal a nutritional deficiency, as well as Sjogren's syndrome, an autoimmune disease that affects the moisture-producing glands. (See A Dry Mouth or Excessive Thirst, below, and Appendix I.)
BLUE LIPS
Someone with blue lips may be making a fashion statement, but it's more likely that he or she has been out in the cold too long. But blue lips may be a sign of Raynaud's disease, a condition in which the small arteries, usually in the fingers and toes but sometimes in other parts of the body, become constricted from the cold or emotional stress. |

Provide a mechanism for follow-up of child for symptoms of nutritional deficiency or toxicity. Provide emotional and educational support for child and family. phenylalanine hydroxylase (enzyme), and tyrosine (product) is supplemented.
In some disorders the absent or inactive enzyme is further down the amino acid degradation pathway and may affect the metabolism of two or more amino acids, for example, leucine, isoleucine, and valine in maple syrup urine disease (MSUD). |
| In addition to the type of procedure, the risk and severity of postoperative nutritional deficiency is dependent on factors such as preoperative nutrition status, occurrence of postoperative complications, the ability to modify eating behavior, and compliance with prescribed vitamin and mineral supplementation [126]. Micronutrient deficiencies of thiamin, vitamin B)2, folate, and iron are common and require treatment. Long-term vitamin and mineral supplementation is necessary as is ongoing nutritional monitoring. |

The outer skin's texture, color and appearance may reflect a nutritional deficiency or glandular malfunction. With any external skin inflammation (skin disease) there is an inflammation of some part of the inner body. Inflammation is not a disease, but an appropriate healing response by the body to rid itself of harmful, irritating substances. As long as the internal inflammation or imbalance continues, the outer skin will continue to suffer from diseases (unless the symptoms are suppressed with drugs or other measures). |
| Most chronic diseases share nutritional deficiency as the number one cause for the underlying degeneration of cells, tissues and organs. Instead of food being our best medicine, modern food production has turned our best foods into man's most harmful poisons. Many among the younger generations have almost completely lost touch with the simple truth that they are what they eat. Even educated doctors tell their patients that their heart attacks, cancers and arthritic pains have nothing to do with the foods they eat. |

Transform adults into diaper-wearing little children, then leave them in a state of nutritional deficiency. Only a drug company could have thought of this one! (And only a desperate, gullible public could actually believe the hype on a drug like this...)
If you're considering taking Alli, you can save yourself the money by following these three simple steps: 1) Sit on the toilet. 2) Do NOT pull your pants down. Leave them on. 3) Go to the bathroom anyway. |

These medications also cause nausea, bloating, fatty stools, and potential nutritional deficiency. As a result of all this, they are no longer prescribed very often. Since the fibrates (e.g., gemfibrozil) can cause cancer and may actually increase mortality, I recommend that these medications should not be taken.
Another class of older drugs, called bile acid sequestrants [e.g., cholestyramine (Locholest, Questran)], binds cholesterol in the gut and decreases its absorption. It lowers cholesterol, including "good" HDL levels. |

Stimulants, emotional trauma, repressed emotions, irregular lifestyle, dehydration, nutritional deficiency, overeating, stress reactions, lack of sleep, accumulation of heavy metals (especially from metal fillings) and chemicals, etc. all hinder the body in its effort to remove metabolic waste, toxins and 30 billion dead cells each day. When these accumulate in any part of the body, they naturally lead to a number of progressive responses that include irritation, swelling, hardening, inflammation, ulceration and abnormal growth of cells. |

Fatigue is often a first sign of nutritional deficiency. Regular feelings of fatigue can occasionally be a sign of a more serious condition, so consult a doctor if you experience serious, prolonged fatigue.
SYMPTOMS
TREATMENT GOAL
• Feeling tired
• Difficulty concentrating
• Increased appetite
It is important to identify the cause of fatigue, and rule out any potentially serious conditions. Treatment involves balancing nutritional levels in the body, developing stress-reduction techniques, and ultimately restoring quality of life. |

McCormick writes a series of papers describing cancer as a "collagen disease secondary to a nutritional deficiency and as a "preventable disease secondary to vitamin C deficiency." [Archives Pediatrics 71: 313-22, 1954; Clinical Physiology 5: 198-204, 1963] Says McCormick: "We maintain that the degree of malignancy is determined inversely by the degree of connective tissue resistance, which in turn is dependent upon the adequacy of vitamin C status."

Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is a nutritional deficiency at literally epidemic proportions in the U.S. In one of the richest, most well-fed nations of the world, more than 25 million Americans are living with the crippling effects of osteoporosis at a cost of about $14 billion each year to the U.S. economy. At least 1.2 million fractures occur each year in the United States as a direct result of osteoporosis.9 I have actually seen patients fracture hips as they simply walked into my office, without any kind of fall or injury. |

Though lotions, washes, and creams can sometimes help treat certain skin ailments, most skin problems stem from an internal nutritional deficiency easily remedied by altering the diet to include specific nutrients. Before you spend a fortune on expensive skin care products, try addressing the problem from the inside out.
Also, beware of the toxic chemicals used in nearly all popular skin care products, including many of the expensive brands sold in department stores. |

Nails That Curve Upward
If the sides of your nails curl upward, commonly called spooning, it can signal a nutritional deficiency, such as of iron or vitamin B12, which can cause anemia. And spooning—medically known as koilonychia—is a nail sign of such systemic disorders as Raynaud's disease (see Chapter 7 and Blue Nails, above) and lupus. (See Butterfly Mask, below and Appendix I.) It can also be a revealing sign that you've been exposed to petroleum-based products, possibly at work. If the fingernails are spooned and extremely thick, it can signal diabetes. |

Muscle endurance and total work capacity, declines rapidly with nutritional deficiency in the area of key minerals like zinc and magnesium.
"Magnesium is essential to a diet for people who are under a lot of stress or want to experience the ultimate rush," says Dr. James Thor, National Director of Extreme Sports Medicine. "Several reasons, one is if you are working out in a gym, or continual stress excessive amounts of lactic acid in the muscle have been linked to higher levels of anxiety," Dr. Thor adds. Large amounts of magnesium are lost when a person is under stress. |

Folate, vitamin B12, and vitamin Bg are inversely related to homocysteine levels, and anyone with a nutritional deficiency that leads to low concentrations of either one or more of these nutrients is at increased risk for elevated homocysteine levels. Testing for homocysteine levels is available through commonly available simple blood tests.
The first meta-analysis of the Homocysteine Lowering Trialists' Collaboration concluded that folic acid supplementation lowered homocysteine levels by about 25 percent. |

Allopathic philosophy ignores the idea or concept of nutritional deficiency. There is no general awareness when a person's disease is caused by a deficiency in a vital mineral like magnesium. Western medical science missed the boat completely when it came to the declining values of magnesium in food. Imagine some huge eye going blind to what modern farming and food processing has been doing to the nutritional values of food. It means that no attention has been paid to the slowly increasing levels of malnutrition, and chronic illness in populations. |

From the perspective of orthomolecular psychiatry, practically any nutritional deficiency that affects the mind—and almost all do in one way or another—can cause anxiety. Therefore, nutrition is often the starting point in treatment.
Dr. Michael Schachter emphasizes the importance of proper diet: "If you suffer from an anxiety disorder, you really need to clean up your diet. Getting off sugar and taking calcium and magnesium works. Also, balancing the stresses in your life, through meditation and other anxiety-reducing disciplines, is important."

Although Goldberg had clearly shown that pellagra was a nutritional deficiency disease that could be prevented and cured by changes in diet, it was not until 1937 that researchers at the University of Wisconsin discovered the key vitamin involved was niacin.6 Interestingly, early pellagrolo-gists found that long-term classical pellagra had to be treated with up to 600 mg of vitamin B-3 daily. In contrast only 10 mg of niacin were needed to prevent the illness. |

There may be a correlation between a nutritional deficiency of vitamin B complex and menorrhagia and metrorrhagia. It has been shown that the liver loses its ability to inactivate estrogen in vitamin B-complex deficiency. We know that some cases of heavy menses and intermenstrual bleeding are due ro an excess of estrogen. Therefore, supplementing with a complex of B vitamins may restore the proper metabolism of estrogen and thus have a role in treating DUB. |

Symptoms of a nutritional deficiency are not necessarily obvious. Associated conditions develop slowly over time and can be very insidious and difficult to identify. You don't need to have scurvy to have a vitamin C deficiency. (Here's an eye-opener: in the last twenty-five years the level of vitamin C deficiency in our population has gone from 3 to 5 percent to a confounding 20 percent—largely due to the shift from whole foods to processed foods.) Vitamin C is essential to your body's breakdown and utilization of food, and the body can neither manufacture it on its own or store it. |

The result is that mainstream food is less nutritious with each passing year, and that doesn't even consider the mass mineral depletion of the soils that further contributes to the nutritional deficiency of foods.
It all comes back to the same fundamentals: If you want to be a healthy person, you'll need to source real food grown by real people who live real close by. Buy local. Support Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) organizations (www.LocalHarvest.org). Visit local farmer co-ops, and grow what you can in your own garden. Buy organic, and research the companies you're buying from. |

This may be as destructive of our health as any nutritional deficiency.
Before the modern food era—and before the rise of nutritionism—people relied for guidance about what to eat on their national or ethnic or regional cultures. We think of culture as a set of beliefs and practices to help mediate our relationship to other people, but of course culture—at least before the rise of modern science—has also played a critical role in helping to mediate people's relationship to nature. |

This is one of the challenges I often face in trying new health-related products: Since I'm not suffering from any disease or nutritional deficiency, it's often very difficult for me to feel any significant difference in such products, whereas other people who are in a worse state of general health might notice a huge difference. So I can't say that I felt any more energy or clarity after drinking this water, but that might simply be because I feel a lot of energy and clarity on a daily basis anyway. |

If the liver's detoxification ability is impaired due to nutritional deficiency and/or toxic overload, these toxins will be stored (often in the weakest areas of the body such as fat) and can initiate chronic disease.
Eliminating sickness from the body entails two simultaneous steps: one is to evict the main cause of the ailment and the other is to elevate the body's general vitality so that its natural and inherent ability to sustain health is allowed to dominate. Granted, sometimes we can't always remove the culprit at the root of our sickness, which can be an unknown in many cases. |
