A growing number of researchers have concluded that it is, and they voice frustration that official nutritional advice has been slow to recognize the problem. To do so, of course, would mean conceding the error of past nutritional advice demonizing fats in general and promoting the switch to seed oils high in omega-6. But it seems likely that sooner or later the government will establish minimum daily requirements for omega-3 (several other governments already have) and, perhaps in time, doctors will routinely test us for omega-3 levels the way they already do for cholesterol. |

Try eliminating dairy and gluten, two of the most common food allergens, from your diet, but seek nutritional advice to ensure you do not develop dietary deficiencies. Taking herbs that reduce inflammation in the nasal passages, such as peppermint oil, may also be useful, as may saline solution washes. If obesity is a factor, begin a weight-reduction program. Avoid muscle relaxants and sedatives, including alcohol, as these relax the palate. Oral devices, that prop the palate open, lessening obstruction, are available and often helpful. |

It's all too common for people to receive a diagnosis, only to be given little, if any, meaningful nutritional advice, and the advice that is dispensed is, unfortunately, often antiquated and ignores the best research.
You Can Reverse Prediabetes
The good news is that you can reverse your health problems, improve your blood sugar, lose weight, and feel more energized than you have in years.
The program we describe in Stop Prediabetes Now focuses on eating habits, nutritional supplements, and light physical activity. We clearly explain exactly what to do to straighten out your eating habits. |

Though maybe they should be testing for omega-6 levels as well, because it's possible that is the greater problem. |
| To the contrary: As I argue in part one, most of the nutritional advice we've received over the last half century (and in particular the advice to replace the fats in our diets with carbohydrates) has actually made us less healthy and considerably fatter.
My aim in this book is to help us reclaim our health and happiness as eaters. To do this requires an exercise that might at first blush seem unnecessary, if not absurd: to offer a defense of food and the eating thereof. |
| If any of the authors of the critical review are conscious of the cosmic irony here—that the principal contribution of thirty years of official nutritional advice has been to replace a possibly mildly unhealthy fat in our diets with a demonstrably lethal one—they are not saying.
The paper is not quite prepared to throw out the entire lipid hypothesis, but by the end precious little of it is left standing. The authors conclude that while total levels of fat in the diet apparently have little bearing on the risk of heart disease (!), the ratio between types of fats does. |

When you go to a physician who's not properly trained and expect to get expert nutritional advice, you're only fooling yourself."
In fact, for the 1979-1980 academic year, only 12 of 126 medical schools in the United States had required nutrition courses, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). By the 2004-2005 school year, 123 of 125 medical schools offered at least one required nutrition course, and 67 schools offered separate elective courses, the AAMC found. In addition, some nutrition is couched in other school courses. |

Most of the official nutritional advice we've been getting since the 1970s has, again unwittingly, helped to push omega-3 s out of the diet and to elevate levels of omega-6. Besides demonizing fats in general, that advice has encouraged us to move from saturated fats of animal origin (some of which, like butter, actually contain respectable amounts of omega-3s) to seed oils, most of which are much higher in omega-6s (corn oil especially), and even more so after partial hydrogenation. |

Department of Agriculture currently pretends to offer objective, consumer-oriented nutritional advice through its well-known food guide pyramid. However, a bit of research into this subject shows that the food pyramid was actually constructed with the help of food industry giants. Not surprisingly, the food guide pyramid has more to do with pleasing the influential food lobbyists than providing useful nutritional advice to the U.S. public.
Since there is such a gap in this knowledge, I decided to create my own chart called The Honest Food Guide. |

The following four paragraphs reveal the strong stand of these acknowledged experts—and might serve as a model for more useful nutritional advice for Americans than what the U.S. government and national health organizations currently provide:
"Present governmental and national heath organization guidelines do not provide a maximal opportunity to either arrest or prevent coronary artery disease. |

Thirty years of nutritional advice have left us fatter, sicker, and more poorly nourished. Which is why we find ourselves in the predicament we do: in need of a whole new way to think about eating.

THE WESTERN DIET AND THE DISEASES OF CIVILIZATION one a THE ABORIGINE IN ALL OF US
In the summer of 1982, a group of ten middle-aged, overweight, and diabetic Aborigines living in settlements near the town of Derby, Western Australia, agreed to participate in an experiment to see if temporarily reversing the process of westernization they had undergone might also reverse their health problems. |

Who at Newsweek reviewed the literature to know whether this is sound nutritional advice or not? And if you have the Atkins Diet plus some "carbs," how different is this diet from the standard American diet, the toxic diet that has been shown to make us fat, give us heart disease, destroy our kidneys, make us blind and lead us to Alzheimer's, cancer and a host of other medical problems?
These are merely examples of the current state of nutrition awareness in the United States. Every day I am reminded that Americans are drowning in a flood of horrible nutrition information. |
| It's being called the Public Nutrition Information Committee," he told me, "and one of its responsibilities will be to decide what is sound nutritional advice to give to the public.
"Obviously," he said, "there's a big overlap between what this new committee wants to do and what we do on the public affairs committee."
I agreed.
"If you're interested, I would like to have you join this new committee as a representative of the public affairs office," he said. |

And if we told Americans the truth about their foods -- if we gave them honest nutritional advice and dietary advice -- we would help people make better decisions that would eliminate chronic disease in their own life, and, for expectant mothers, allow them to give birth to children without birth defects. We need honest food labeling and we need to outlaw toxic ingredients like aspartame, monosodium glutamate, food additives and chemical preservatives like sodium nitrite that directly cause cancers of the digestive tract. |

Do you find that patients are able to integrate the diet and nutritional advice?
Dr. Pizzorno: Well, not everybody's willing to do that, but I admit, I see a skewed population. And that is, if people come to see me, and come to see naturopathic doctors, in general they know what to expect -- they know they're not just going to get a pill. They know they're going to have to change their lives, so people who come to see us seem to be more willing to make the changes. |

NewsTarget editor Mike Adams also offered some nutritional advice. Adams is a former prediabetic and author of How to Halt Diabetes in 25 Days (available at www.TruthPublishing.com), a popular natural health guide that teaches readers how to overcome type-2 diabetes in as little as three weeks. "Clinical studies have shown that early-stage diabetes can be completely reversed through food choice and exercise," Adams said. "And it all starts with avoiding refined sugars and white flour. Santa, eat fresh fruit or other natural snacks, not processed foods made with sugar!"

Their experiences had taught them that traditionally trained doctors have little to offer when it comes to sound nutritional advice. Research bears this out—a 1990 published study suggests that only about one-quarter of medical schools require training in the medical nutrition sciences, and of those medical schools that offer nutrition electives, many achieve low enrollments. |

| Getting back to pets and veterinarians, by the way, I happen to believe that most people would get far better nutritional advice by visiting veterinarians, rather than old-school doctors. Unfortunately, veterinarians cannot give medical advice to humans. But if they could, their advice would be far more useful and effective at preventing and even reversing chronic disease than the advice given out by most physicians.
And the reason, once again, is that veterinarians have to understand the true causes of disease and the relationships between nutrition and health. |

After all, Jonny had been training athletes for years using high-carbohydrate diets, and here was some pointy-head scientist telling him that all of his nutritional advice for athletes was wrong. Needless to say, he was ready to rake me over the coals.. .until he heard my lecture. For the first time, Jonny was introduced to the nuances of hormone control theory using food as a drug. Although there was a lot of endocrinology (the science of hormones) being thrown around in the lecture (after all, I am still a pointy-head scientist), Jonny devoured every bit of information. |
| The exercise program is on much more solid ground than the nutritional advice. The Curves workout incorporates strength training, cardiovascular training, and stretching in a simple thirty-minute routine that you do three times a week. Though there are Curves gyms all over the country where exercise leaders take you through the workout, the book provides a pretty darn good at-home version. The only equipment you need is an exercise tube, which is like a rubber rope with two handles, one on each side. |

| And I don't mean to only point the finger at doctors and say, "It's their fault that patients aren't following nutritional advice." It's also the responsibility of patients to adopt that advice and make it part of their lifestyle rather than simply ignoring it.
Good Nutrition is Impossible Without Supplementation
We've talked about the myth of the three balanced meals a day, why humans cannot get sufficient nutrition from the national food supply, the processing of grains that destroys nutrition, the depleted soils, the USDA Food Guide Pyramid, and the USRDA numbers. |
| There are many doctors who attempt to give their patients nutritional advice, only to be routinely ignored. A large number of patients come in to hospitals and medical clinics and actually demand prescription drugs they've seen advertised on television.
They don't want to follow good nutrition. They don't want to give up their ice cream. They don't want to give up their morning bacon and orange juice and pancakes with syrup and margarine. They want to eat whatever they want to eat and then they'll come into the clinic and demand that their doctor fix their health problem. |

The food lobby, the big sugar lobby and the soft drink lobby have all blockaded what would have otherwise been good nutritional advice. These food and beverage companies are preventing the government from providing information to the public that would save countless lives and dramatically improve the quality of life while reducing healthcare costs in the decades ahead. This action by the food lobby, in my opinion, is nothing less than the outright suppression of advice that would prevent chronic disease and save countless American lives. |

| The fact is that the USDA Food Guide Pyramid is not only heavily influenced by politics of food industries; it is also a provider of terrible nutritional advice. If you were to follow the USDA Food Guide Pyramid and eat the foods it recommends for years or decades, you would no doubt find yourself being diagnosed with various chronic diseases caused by nutritional deficiencies. Nowhere does the USDA Food Guide Pyramid recommend that these should be whole, unprocessed foods. Nowhere does it talk about healthy oils or putting raw vegetables high on the list. |

Consider the words of Morris Krok in his book Diet, Health, And Living On Air:

Can Stress Stall Weight Loss?
You bet. Not only can stress stall weight loss, it can reverse it. Stress—which can come from lack of sleep, extremely low-calorie dieting, and, of course, from life itself—causes the release of hormones such as Cortisol and adrenaline. |

Much of the nutritional advice available for psoriasis is contradictory. In my therapeutic experience, I have seen success with both a grapefruit fast and a no-citrus diet! Psoriasis is the epitome of a "holistic" disease, it being almost impossible to generalize about recommendations. Specifics of diet must be based upon the individual, not the pathology. |
