Vitamin D deficiency is being called a "silent epidemic" by many nutritionists these days, many of whom don't believe we get nearly enough of this cancer-fighting, bone-building nutrient.
CLA in "Good" Butter Can Keep You Trim
When you eat animal products that come from healthy, grass-fed animals, you are getting the benefits of the animal's diet. Real feed for cows is green grass, not grains. Foods like butter that come from grass-fed cows are rich in the fats proven to be healthful, like omega-3s, which are virtually absent from their grain-fed counterparts. |

We don't know why, though some nutritionists, like my associate Suzanne Copp, M.S., think that it might have to do with a copper deficiency that can be created by taking too much zinc.
Point is, you can do really well with supplementing in the 15 to 50 mg range, although for some situations (like macular degeneration or fighting off a cold or healing a wound) it's perfectly okay to use a higher dose for a short time. In general, a basic 15 mg a day seems to help fend off most common problems. |
| Doctors are not nutritionists any more than plumbers are carpenters. Many are absolutely great at what they do—but they are not great at what they don't do. And unfortunately, either by temperament or training, they are not humble about what they don't know, and are frequendy willing to dispense advice and information about nutrition with absolute authority even when they have absolutely no idea what they're talking about.
Which, unfortunately, is more often than you might imagine.
Is it changing? You bet it is. |
| A nutritional biochemist, he's the cofounder of The Institute for Functional Medicine and has been in the forefront of educating doctors, chiropractors, nutritionists, and other healthcare professionals about nutrition, biochemistry, hormones, and health for more than twenty-five years. There's very little about hormones and endocrinology that Jeffrey Bland doesn't know.
A few years ago, I attended his seminar on nutritional neuroendocrinology, a daylong affair devoted to the discussion of female hormones, health, and behavior. |

Pretty much everything I know of value about hypertension I learned from Mark Houston, as did most of the nutritionists and doctors with whom I've trained. Boric acid: Studies show the effectiveness of boric acid as a douche is very high, especially in women with chronic resistant yeast infections. One study with 100 women showed a 98 percent success rate with this condition.
Boric acid suppositories, containing 600 mg of boric acid, have been used successfully as a treatment for vaginal yeast infections. |

Many other nutrition experts agree with our assessment, and we were gratified to learn about a supermarket chain that came to a similar conclusion. nutritionists at
Hannaford Brothers, a New England supermarket chain, gave twenty-seven thousand food products a rating that ranged from zero to three stars. Three-star foods were the most nutritious, whereas zero stars meant that the foods had no redeeming nutritional value.
More than three-fourths of the Hannaford Brothers supermarket's foods received no stars, including many products that were advertised as being healthy! |

Nevertheless, some version of "the grapefruit diet" has been around forever, and so has the legend that grapefruit has some mystical property that helps people lose weight. nutritionists like me have been telling people for eons that that's simply not the case, but that grapefruit, being a whole food with enzymes and low calories and high volume, can certainly help fill you up and be part of any smart weight loss regimen.

Happily, a growing number of nutrition-oriented treatment programs, often run by naturopaths, chiropractors, osteopathic physicians, nutritionists, eating disorder specialists, or holistic M.D.s, are having astounding success by taking innovative approaches to help people lick their carb addictions, as well as eating disorders such as bulimia and binge eating. These programs are unique in the sense that most seek to rebalance the individual's biochemistry through diet. |

In fact, the population as a whole had ideal weight-to-height ratios as compared to the Body Mass Index figures used by nutritionists. Digestive problems are rare. Constipation is uncommon. | Milk-caused Osteoporosis
Since milk intolerance is becoming increasingly common among all age groups in the Western world, nutritionists and doctors are starting to suspect that cow's milk may not be such a natural food for humans after all.
Milk is a highly mucus-forming food that can cause irritation and congestion throughout the gastrointestinal tract. If regularly consumed, milk can leave an increasingly hardening and almost impermeable coating on the inside of the intestinal membranes. This restricts absorption of nutrients, including the calcium, magnesium and zinc needed to form bones. |
| Shortly thereafter, nutritionists considered them good for slimming, and the latest low carb craze dismisses them as junk food. Torn between various health doctrines, we look for perfect answers to our problems. In the end, when your body is exhausted because of trying to adjust to one diet after another, you may begin to realize that your body's requirements are totally unique and that they undergo constant changes, often from one day to the next. |

Center for Human Nutrition at University of California in Los Angeles and one of my favorite nutritionists, "California avocados rank highest in lutein, which acts as an antioxidant, and beta-sitosterol, which blocks cholesterol absorption compared ounce-per-ounce to other fruits. These attributes make the avocado an important fruit to choose, along with other fruits and vegetables, to protect your heart."
Though there are a few grams of saturated fat in an avocado, it's precisely the kind of saturated fat I'm not afraid of. |
| While these results have not been consistently duplicated, most nutritionists and health professionals feel there is a significant benefit to be gotten from high-fiber foods. Garbanzo beans are a great way to add fiber to your diet.
Garbanzos Curb Overeating
Fiber—particularly soluble fiber—can also lower blood cholesterol levels and slow the absorption of sugar, which is hugely important both for people with diabetes and for people with any blood sugar challenges (metabolic syndrome). A high-fiber diet will probably reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. |
| Because of their critical importance in supporting overall health, and because most people don't get nearly enough in their diet, many nutritionists consider probiotic supplements to be among the most important supplements a person can take on a daily basis. That's probably true—however, you can go a long way toward creating a healthy "gut environment" by consuming foods that are rich in these amazing, health-promoting microorganisms.

Some doctors and nutritionists have operated under the assumption that more iron can only be better. The food industry currently supplements everything from flour to breakfast cereal to baby formula with iron.
You know what they say about too much of a good thing?
Our relationship with iron is much more complex than it's been considered traditionally. It's essential—but it also provides a proverbial leg up to just about every biological threat to our lives. |

So depending on your age (and your grandmother), you may need to go back to your great- or even great-great grandmother. Some nutritionists recommend going back even further. John Yudkin, a British nutritionist whose early alarms about the dangers of refined carbohydrates were overlooked in the 1960s and 1970s, once advised, "Just don't eat anything your Neolithic ancestors wouldn't have recognized and you'll be ok."
What would shopping this way mean in the supermarket? Well, imagine your great grandmother at your side as you roll down the aisles. |
| This reductionist way of thinking about food had been pointed out and criticized before (notably by the Canadian historian Harvey Levenstein, the British nutritionist Geoffrey Cannon, and the American nutritionists Joan Gussow and Marion Nestle), but it had never before been given a proper name: "nutritionism." Proper names have a way of making visible things we don't easily see or simply take for granted.
The first thing to understand about nutritionism is that it is not the same thing as nutrition. As the "-ism" suggests, it is not a scientific subject but an ideology. |

Nutritionists and natural health practitioners have relied on it for years as a dependable yeast slayer. Its antifungal effect has been demonstrated in clinical trials. Though the exact mechanism of its action against yeast isn't completely understood, we think it penetrates and destabilizes the yeast cell walls. Caprylic acid is absorbed very rapidly, so capsules should be enteric coated or timed release for best results

At the time, clinical nutritionists were telling people to stay away from all fatty foods and snack foods, including nuts. "But," Fraser said, cleaving the air with both palms for emphasis, "it turns out that most of the fat in nuts is unsaturated fat. Lessons from the Mediterranean
In recent years, nutritionists have extolled the benefits of what has come to be known as the Mediterranean Diet, which broadly consists of a high intake of fish, fruits and vegetables, legumes, cereals, and olive oil, and a low to moderate intake of dairy products, red meat and poultry, and alcohol. This is a diet thought to be vaguely reminiscent of our hunter-gatherer ancestors (minus dairy, oil, and alcohol), and thus more in accordance with our genetic inheritance. |

My mom's call reminded me yet again of something that many nutritionists and diet books ignore: You do not have to vary your diet as widely as you're often led to believe. Most people do not eat a different breakfast every day of the week. Most people repeat their favorite lunches a few times a week. This is perfectly fine and can be perfectly nutritious, too. If you follow the overall SuperFoodsRx Diet recommendations you'll be eating an extraordinarily healthy diet and you'll be losing weight, too—without spending all your spare time shopping and cooking.

But the medical community doesn't accept that hypoglycemia is as predominant as some nutritionists say it is because the doctors are thinking about the organic forms, which are much rarer. But with the diet that we are eating today, which is high in carbohydrates and low in basically everything good for you, hypoglycemia is manifesting itself in great numbers.
As a child, I ate a diet that was full ofsimple carbohydrates—all sorts of sweets and sugars—and had a lot of the symptoms that are associated with hypoglycemia: I was hyperactive and had asthma. |
